Interesting facts
1

The temple was dedicated to Vishnu, a departure from the Shiva-centric focus of many other Angkorian temples of the era.

The interior brick walls were carved directly rather than having reliefs applied to them, a technique rarely seen in other Angkor monuments.

The 'CA' marks on replaced bricks stand for 'Conservation Angkor', identifying the French-led restoration work.

4

The alignment of the five towers is unusually linear, with the central tower being the largest.

5

The bas-relief of Vishnu in the central tower depicts him in his Vamana (dwarf) avatar, illustrating the story of him taking three steps to claim the universe.

Overview

Prasat Kravan is a 10th-century Hindu temple notable for its rare interior brick bas-reliefs depicting Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi. Built in 921 AD during the reign of Harshavarman I, it predates the main Angkor Wat complex. The temple consists of five brick towers aligned in a row along a north-south axis on a single terrace. Unlike many other Angkorian temples constructed of sandstone, this site is primarily composed of fired red brick. It underwent extensive restoration in the 1960s, which utilized new bricks stamped with 'CA' to differentiate them from the original masonry. The central tower contains the largest and most well-preserved reliefs. Its design reflects a specific stylistic period in Khmer architecture that emphasizes verticality and intricate exterior brick carvings.

Insider tips

Visit during the shoulder hours to avoid the intense heat of the sun reflecting off the red brick.

Bring a small flashlight to better illuminate the carvings in the dimly lit central tower.

Plan to visit this temple as a quick stop on your way to or from the Banteay Kdei or Srah Srang area.

What to avoid

Do not touch the ancient brick carvings, as the oils from human skin accelerate the erosion of the porous material.

Etiquette

Shoulders and knees must be covered; remove hats inside the towers.
