Interesting facts
1

The name 'Khomyak' translates to 'Hamster' in Ukrainian, likely derived from the shape of the mountain seen from a distance.

2

The summit's Virgin Mary statue was constructed and carried to the top by local enthusiasts to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.

3

Unlike many other Carpathian peaks, the summit of Khomyak is composed of large sandstone boulders rather than soil.

4

The Gorgany range, where the mountain is located, is the only place in the Carpathians where the tectonic structure consists of flysch sandstone, leading to the unique 'stone river' slopes.

5

The mountain's summit ridge is a prime location to observe the transition between subalpine and alpine vegetation zones.

Overview

Mount Khomyak is a prominent peak in the Gorgany range of the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, reaching an elevation of 1,542 meters. It is distinct for its characteristic conical shape and the massive collection of stone placers, known as 'gorgan', that cover its upper slopes. At the very summit stands a 6-meter-tall statue of the Virgin Mary, installed in 2006. The mountain offers 360-degree panoramic views of neighboring peaks, including Mount Synyak and the Dovbushanka range. Hikers can access the peak via several trails starting near Tatariv or Polianytsia. The ascent involves traversing dense spruce forests before reaching the rocky, treeless alpine zone. Despite its popularity, the upper section requires caution due to loose, moss-covered shale. It serves as a popular destination for both summer trekking and winter ski-touring. The mountain is situated within the Gorgany Nature Reserve area.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, high-ankle trekking boots to provide stability on the unstable, shifting sandstone rocks at the summit.

Carry a trekking pole for the descent, as the loose shale can be slippery even in dry conditions.

Check weather forecasts specifically for high-altitude zones, as sudden fog or lightning storms are common at this elevation.

What to avoid

Attempting the final steep ascent during heavy rain or snow, as the stone boulders become extremely slippery and hazardous.

Good to know

Trail access may be restricted during periods of high avalanche risk in winter or severe weather warnings issued by the State Emergency Service.

Etiquette

Practice 'Leave No Trace' principles; carry all waste down from the summit, as there are no trash facilities on the trail.
