Overview

The Vorokhta Railway Viaduct is one of the oldest and longest stone arch bridges in Ukraine, constructed in 1895 during the Austro-Hungarian era. Designed as part of the railway link to transport timber and passengers through the Carpathian Mountains, it spans the Prut River valley. The structure stands 28 meters tall and stretches 130 meters in length, with its main arch spanning 65 meters. It is a masonry viaduct, distinguished by its curved shape and robust stone blocks. Despite its age, the structure remains intact and serves as a landmark of 19th-century civil engineering. It was built by Austrian engineers using local stone and high-quality mortar. The viaduct is no longer used for active heavy rail traffic, having been superseded by a parallel modern bridge built in 2000. It is a designated historical monument of the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
