Overview

Mujang Eupseong is a well-preserved Joseon Dynasty walled fortress located in Gochang, designated as a Historic Site of South Korea. The fortress perimeter measures approximately 1.2 kilometers, enclosing an area that served as a critical administrative and military hub for the region. Originally constructed in 1417 during the reign of King Taejong, the fortress functioned as a defense against coastal pirate incursions. The site features a restored central gate, earthen ramparts, and reconstructed administrative buildings including the Dongheon and Gwan-a. It holds historical significance as the initial site of the Donghak Peasant Revolution uprising in 1894. Recent restoration efforts have focused on stabilizing the stone walls and rehabilitating the internal structures to reflect their historical layout. The grounds are characterized by flat, open terrain that allows for full navigation of the perimeter.
