Overview

Dosolam is a significant hermitage located in the mountains above Seonunsa Temple, known for its Maitreya Buddha carving embedded directly into a massive granite cliff face. The site features the Magae-bul, a rock-carved Buddha standing approximately 13 meters tall, which dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty. Visitors reach the hermitage via a forest path that follows a stream, passing the Naewon-gung shrine on a rocky ridge. The hermitage serves as an active site for Buddhist practice and meditation, detached from the main temple complex. It is positioned at the end of a valley trail in Seonunsan Provincial Park.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the approach involves a steady, though not steep, uphill hike on dirt paths.

Bring water, as there are limited facilities between the main Seonunsa Temple and the hermitage.

Plan your visit to coincide with the changing foliage in autumn for the most scenic views of the surrounding gorge.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike in high-heeled or formal footwear; avoid visiting during extreme weather as mountain trails may become slippery.

Etiquette

Maintain silence when near prayer halls; remove headwear inside buildings; refrain from loud conversations.
