Overview

Stonske zidine is a 5.5-kilometer-long defensive fortification system connecting the towns of Ston and Mali Ston on the Pelješac Peninsula. Originally constructed in the 14th century by the Republic of Ragusa, these walls are the longest preserved fortification system in Europe and the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China. The structure consists of three forts, forty-one towers, and seven bastions designed to protect the highly valuable salt pans of the region. Visitors can walk along the restored ramparts, which offer an elevated vantage point over the Ston salt pans and the Adriatic coastline. The complex remains a significant example of medieval military architecture and defensive planning in the Mediterranean. Much of the original wall was damaged by earthquakes and neglect, leading to extensive restoration efforts that have opened segments to public pedestrian access.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes with good grip, as the stone stairs and pathways can be uneven and steep.

Carry plenty of water and sun protection, as the white stone reflects heat and there is minimal shade along the top of the walls.

Begin your walk from the Mali Ston side if you prefer a descent into the main town of Ston.

What to avoid

Attempting the entire length during high summer temperatures at midday without sufficient hydration.

Good to know

Parts of the wall may be closed during severe weather conditions, specifically during periods of high wind (Bura).

Etiquette

Avoid sitting or climbing on the ancient crenelated edges of the walls for safety; stay on the marked stone paths.
