The park was inaugurated in 1999 as part of a project to beautify the eastern bank of the Hooghly River.
It is situated on land reclaimed from the riverfront, once part of the busy Kolkata Port Trust area.
The park offers one of the few direct, pedestrian-friendly access points to the Hooghly riverfront in the city center.
The landscaping includes significant stone work and iron fixtures intended to mimic the architectural aesthetic of colonial-era Kolkata.
Several decommissioned mechanical amusement rides are located within the park premises.
Millennium Park is a landscaped riverside garden stretching along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River in Kolkata. Built as a joint initiative by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority and the Millennium Commission, it features a series of amusement rides, children's play areas, and manicured lawns. The park serves as a green buffer between the dense urban landscape of B.B.D. Bagh and the active riverfront. It is specifically designed to provide pedestrian access to the riverbank, which is otherwise largely industrialized or occupied by port infrastructure. The space is maintained as a public leisure area for families and couples seeking views of the river and the iconic Vidyasagar Setu bridge. The park infrastructure includes paved walkways, sculptures, and small fountains dispersed throughout the grounds.
The riverfront railing at sunset provides a clear view of the Vidyasagar Setu suspension bridge against the sky.
Carry your own drinking water as on-site facilities are limited.
Visit during the late afternoon to experience the transition from daylight to the sunset view over the river.
Stay on the paved walkways to avoid the uneven ground in unmaintained sections of the park.
Avoid visiting during the peak heat of midday, as there is limited shade; do not wander into poorly lit areas after dark.
Maintain modest attire consistent with local cultural norms; refrain from public displays of affection.
