The Haesu Gwaneumsang, or Sea Guanyin Statue, is a colossal 16-meter-tall white marble figure overlooking the East Sea from the Naksansa Temple grounds. It serves as a symbolic protector of those at sea, situated on a granite lotus pedestal atop a coastal cliff. The statue faces southeast and is characterized by a serene expression, holding a water bottle in one hand. It is part of the larger Naksansa Temple complex, which was originally founded in 671 AD by the monk Uisang. The statue was completed in 1977 to commemorate the temple’s long history and religious significance. Visitors reach the statue by ascending a stone path that provides panoramic views of the coastline. The surrounding area features prayer stones and incense burners maintained by temple practitioners. It is one of the most prominent Buddhist landmarks in the Gangwon province.
The viewing platform path leading up to the statue offers the best angle to capture the figure against the backdrop of the ocean.

Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes as the climb to the statue involves steep stone stairs.
Visit the nearby Hongnyeonam Hermitage to see a glass floor window that looks directly down into the sea.
