Overview

Yeonggeumjeong Sunrise Pavilion is a landmark located on the rocky coast of Sokcho, South Korea, known for the sound of waves hitting the boulders. The name refers to the sound of the sea against the craggy rocks, which traditionally sounded like the playing of a geomungo, a traditional Korean string instrument. The site consists of two distinct structures: one pavilion situated on a high rock cliff and another located at the end of a long, bridge-connected pier extending into the East Sea. The area is highly regarded as a premier vantage point for watching the sunrise over the ocean. The current stone pavilions are modern reconstructions, as the original terrain was altered significantly by the construction of a nearby jetty. The site is open to the public 24 hours a day. It serves as a central hub for coastal walking paths in the Dongmyeong-dong area.

Photo spot

The mid-point of the bridge connecting to the sea-bound pavilion provides the best frame for both the pavilion and the horizon.

Insider tips

Walk across the bridge to the secondary pavilion for a 360-degree view of the coastline and harbor.

Visit during the early morning to catch the sun rising directly over the East Sea.

Bring a windbreaker even in summer, as the sea breeze on the pier remains constant.

What to avoid

Do not climb on the restricted rocky outcroppings outside the designated paths for safety.
