Overview

Saidai-ji, established in 765 AD by Empress Kōken, serves as the head temple of the Shingon Risshu sect of Buddhism. Originally constructed as one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara to protect the nation, its current form is significantly smaller than its original scale, which once featured two seven-story pagodas. The temple grounds house several important cultural properties, including a notable sculpture of the deity Aizen Myoo. It is historically significant for the tradition of the Omori-e tea ceremony, held periodically throughout the year. Visitors can view the Main Hall, the Aizen-do Hall, and the Shiyo-do Hall. The temple functions as a center for the study of Ritsu, the monastic discipline sect.
