Mototaki Waterfall is a 5-meter-high, 30-meter-wide spring-fed waterfall located on the slopes of Mount Chokai. Unlike typical rivers, the water originates entirely from snowmelt and groundwater filtering through porous lava layers of the mountain. The falls emerge horizontally from a moss-covered cliff face rather than cascading vertically from a riverbed. This geological formation results in water that is exceptionally clear and consistently cold. The surrounding area is part of the Chokai Quasi-National Park and features high biodiversity including endemic moss species. Visitors access the site via a flat, maintained trail that passes through dense beech forests. The site remains active year-round as the constant groundwater supply prevents the spring from freezing entirely in winter. It is officially recognized as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.
