Overview

Mount Chōkai is a 2,236-meter active stratovolcano straddling the border of Yamagata and Akita prefectures. Known as the 'Dewa Fuji' for its resemblance to Mount Fuji, it is a significant site for Shugendō, an ancient Japanese mountain ascetic practice. The mountain features two main peaks, Shinzan and Chōkaisan, separated by a volcanic crater containing the Chōkai Lake. Hikers encounter diverse alpine flora, including the endemic Chōkai thistle. The mountain is part of the Chōkai Quasi-National Park and remains a destination for traditional mountain pilgrimage. Volcanic activity is monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency, with occasional minor steam emissions. The terrain varies from coastal lowlands at the base to rugged, snow-covered volcanic ridges at the summit.

Insider tips

Check the Japan Meteorological Agency's volcanic activity level alerts before planning your ascent.

Bring specialized trekking poles, as the volcanic scree on the upper slopes is loose and unstable.

Pack layers for rapidly changing weather conditions, which can drop significantly in temperature even in summer.

What to avoid

Attempting the ascent without proper high-altitude mountain gear or during periods of active volcanic warnings.

Good to know

Trails are generally closed due to heavy snow accumulation from November through early June.

Etiquette
