Overview

AquaRio is the largest marine aquarium in South America, housing over 5,000 animals representing 350 marine species within a total volume of 4.5 million liters of saltwater. The facility features a central main tank with a 20-meter long viewing tunnel that passes directly through the shark exhibit. The structure occupies a renovated warehouse area in the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro. It utilizes a sophisticated life-support system that filters and treats 100% of the water volume every 40 minutes. The exhibit route is designed as a single continuous path leading visitors from the upper levels down to the submarine tunnel. In addition to the main tank, there are 28 smaller tanks showcasing diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs and local Atlantic species. The aquarium serves as a research and conservation center, collaborating with several Brazilian universities. It is housed in an industrial-style building that highlights the revitalization of the Porto Maravilha district.
