Overview

Rejvíz is a national nature reserve located in the Jeseník Mountains, known for housing the largest peat bog in Moravia. The site features a unique raised bog ecosystem with rare flora, including carnivorous round-leaved sundew. Visitors access the Great Moss Lake (Velké mechové jezírko) via a wooden boardwalk trail designed to protect the fragile wetland environment. The lake itself is a dystrophic pool characterized by dark, acidic water caused by high humic acid content. The surrounding forest consists primarily of spruce and mountain pine, providing a habitat for diverse moss species and insects. It is one of the highest-altitude settlements in the Czech Republic, situated at approximately 750 meters above sea level.

Insider tips

Stay strictly on the wooden boardwalks to avoid damaging the rare peat moss and sinking into the soft terrain.

Bring mosquito repellent, as the stagnant water in the peat bog creates an ideal breeding ground during warmer months.

Wear waterproof hiking boots, as trails leading to the boardwalk can remain muddy even after rain.

What to avoid

Attempting to deviate from the boardwalks, which is prohibited to prevent environmental damage and personal injury.

Good to know

The nature trail is typically closed during the winter season due to snow and icy conditions on the wooden paths.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails, do not pick plants, do not swim in the lake, and keep dogs on a leash.
