Overview

The Cryptoporticus of Reims is a remarkably preserved subterranean Roman gallery dating back to the 3rd century AD, serving as a rare example of Roman civic architecture in Northern Europe. Located beneath the Place du Forum, this U-shaped underground structure originally supported the floor of the ancient Roman forum's basilica and market square. The site consists of two vaulted galleries featuring limestone masonry and barrel-vaulted ceilings. Archeologists believe the space functioned as a storage area or a covered walkway protecting citizens from the elements. It stands as one of the few remnants of Durocortorum, the ancient Roman name for Reims and the capital of the Belgica province. The site is frequently used today to host rotating art exhibitions within its historical stone walls. Visitors can observe the distinct Roman construction techniques, including the use of opus vittatum stonework.

What to avoid
