Interesting facts

3

The site is part of the Hamilton 'Waterfall Capital of the World' designation, which tracks over 100 waterfalls in the city limits.

4

The shale cliffs surrounding the falls are prone to erosion, making the immediate vicinity geologically active and hazardous.

Overview

Upper Chedoke Falls is an 18-metre ribbon waterfall located on the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton, Ontario. The waterfall is fed by the Chedoke Creek, which flows over the escarpment edge. The falls are characterized by their segmented, thin stream appearance during drier periods and more vigorous flow following heavy rain. It is situated in proximity to the Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath. The site forms part of the larger Chedoke Falls complex, which includes a secondary, larger waterfall known as Chedoke Falls. Access to the base of the falls is restricted due to environmental sensitivity and safety concerns regarding the unstable shale banks. The surrounding area features the Westcliffe neighbourhood and the brow of the escarpment.

Insider tips

View the waterfall from the designated upper observation points rather than attempting to descend the steep, unmaintained banks.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear as the escarpment trails can be muddy and uneven.

Visit after a rainfall event for the best visibility, as the ribbon flow can become very thin during dry summer months.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike to the base of the falls, as the steep, unstable shale slopes are prone to rockfalls and are not officially maintained.

Good to know

None.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile escarpment ecosystem; climbing the banks is discouraged for safety and conservation.
