Overview

Albion Falls is a 19-metre high complex classical cascade waterfall located on the Red Hill Creek in Hamilton, Ontario. The waterfall features two main upper tiers that flow over a series of rock ledges into a lower, wider cascade. It is situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The rock formations are primarily composed of Lockport dolostone and Rochester shale. The site is a prominent component of the Hamilton waterfall collection, which consists of over 100 waterfalls throughout the city. The area surrounding the falls is heavily forested, creating a distinct microclimate at the base of the gorge.

Insider tips

Stick to the marked viewing platforms to avoid damaging the sensitive ecosystem of the gorge.

Bring footwear with strong grip, as the terrain around the escarpment trails can be uneven and slippery.

Use a polarizing filter on your camera to reduce glare from the water and wet rock surfaces.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb down into the gorge floor, as the trails are unofficial, unstable, and often result in emergency rescue calls.

Etiquette

Hiking boots or sturdy athletic shoes are required; stay on designated trails to prevent erosion and for personal safety.
