Overview

The Sejongdaewang Wangjataesil in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a historic site housing the placenta chambers of 18 of King Sejong the Great's 19 sons. The site was established during the Joseon Dynasty as part of the royal tradition of burying placentas in auspicious locations to ensure the prosperity of the royal lineage. It is the largest cluster of such chambers in Korea, featuring stone structures arranged in a specific layout on a hillside. The site includes the placenta stone of King Danjong, which remained even after his deposition and subsequent execution. During the Japanese colonial period, many placenta jars were removed, but the site was reconstructed to restore its historical integrity. It is currently designated as a Historic Site of South Korea.
