Overview

The Sapporo Clock Tower is a wooden structure built in 1878 as a military drill hall for the Sapporo Agricultural College. It is officially designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The building features an American-style balloon-frame construction, a design technique uncommon in Japan at the time of its origin. Its mechanical clock, manufactured by the E. Howard & Co. in Boston, has remained operational since its installation in 1881. The interior currently houses a small museum dedicated to the history of the building and the early development of Sapporo. It serves as one of the oldest clock towers in Japan and represents the Western-influenced architectural movement of the Meiji era.
