Overview

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve is a 100-hectare urban sanctuary located in the Moreleta Spruit valley. The reserve protects a highveld ecosystem featuring hilly grassland, dense thickets, and a seasonal stream. It is home to free-roaming mountain reedbuck, springbok, blesbok, and zebras. Bird enthusiasts can observe over 100 recorded species, including raptors and water-associated birds. The reserve functions as a protected ecological corridor within the sprawling Pretoria metropolitan area. Several hiking trails ranging from moderate to steep traverse the ridge, offering panoramic views of the eastern suburbs. The area was previously a farm and still retains historical stone ruins. It is managed as a municipal conservation area to preserve biodiversity. There are no large predatory animals, making the trails safe for family-oriented wildlife viewing.

Insider tips

Carry water and sun protection as the trail sections on the ridges are fully exposed.

Stick to the marked trails to avoid damaging sensitive grassland vegetation and to minimize disturbance to wildlife.

Keep a safe distance from zebras and blesbok, particularly during mating or calving seasons when they may be protective.

What to avoid

Attempting to feed the wildlife, as this disrupts their natural foraging behaviors and can create aggressive dependencies.

Etiquette

No littering, no loud music, and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times to protect the local fauna.
