Overview

Rietvlei Nature Reserve is a 3,800-hectare highveld grassland sanctuary located on the outskirts of Pretoria. It is one of the world's largest urban nature reserves, centered around the Rietvlei Dam which provides a significant portion of the city's water supply. The reserve hosts a variety of fauna, including cheetahs, rhinos, buffalo, and a large population of black wildebeest. Visitors can engage in game viewing, bird watching with over 300 recorded species, and freshwater fishing. The infrastructure includes a dedicated clubhouse, overnight lapa facilities, and several picnic areas. The reserve acts as a critical catchment area for the Hennops River system.

Insider tips

Bring high-quality binoculars, as the expansive grassland makes distant wildlife difficult to spot without magnification.

Keep all vehicle windows closed when driving near the rhino or buffalo populations for safety.

Pack enough supplies as there are no food vendors within the main game-viewing area.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk or cycle in areas inhabited by large predators or buffalo; stick to marked trails and driving roads.

Etiquette

Stay inside your vehicle at all times unless at designated picnic or camping sites; do not litter or disturb the natural habitat.
