The name stems from a local folk legend claiming nineteen maidens were turned into stone for dancing on a Sunday.
The two outlier stones, the Pipers, are located approximately 150 meters to the northeast and 250 meters to the southwest of the main circle.
Despite being a ceremonial site, the ring is notable for its lack of a surrounding earthen bank or ditch, which is atypical for many similar regional monuments.
The stones are composed of local granite, which was sourced from the surrounding landscape rather than transported from a distance.
The site orientation shows subtle alignment patterns with the winter solstice sunset, though these remain subject to archaeological debate.
The Merry Maidens is a Bronze Age stone circle located near St Buryan in Cornwall, consisting of 19 upright granite stones arranged in a near-perfect circle. The stones measure between 1.5 and 2.5 meters in height and enclose a space approximately 24 meters in diameter. It is one of the most complete and well-preserved examples of its type in Britain. Archaeological assessments suggest the site dates to approximately 2500–1500 BC. The circle is accompanied by two nearby outliers known as the Pipers, which stand significantly taller than the stones in the circle. The site is situated on relatively level ground within a wider agricultural landscape. Access is provided directly from a pull-off on the B3315 road. It is maintained as a free-to-access historic monument under the care of the local heritage network.
