Overview

The Penwith Heritage Coast encompasses 18 miles of rugged Atlantic coastline in West Cornwall, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The landscape is characterized by granite cliffs, narrow coves, and significant archaeological remains dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It serves as a vital habitat for maritime heathland and choughs, a rare species of crow. The South West Coast Path runs the entire length of the heritage coastline, providing access to remote beaches such as Porthcurno and Gwenver. Industrial history is prevalent, with numerous disused engine houses from the region's 19th-century tin and copper mining heritage still visible along the cliff edges. Much of the coastline is managed by the National Trust, ensuring the preservation of the maritime environment.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as the coastal paths are uneven, steep, and often muddy.

Check the tide charts before planning a descent to any cove, as several beaches are completely submerged at high tide.

Carry a physical map or offline GPS, as mobile phone reception is extremely unreliable along the cliff paths.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or enter abandoned mining ruins, as structures are fragile and often structurally unstable.

Etiquette

Keep dogs on a lead near cliff edges and around livestock; follow the Countryside Code by taking all litter home.
