Overview

Děčínský Sněžník is a 33-meter-high stone lookout tower built in 1864, situated on the highest peak of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the Czech Republic. The tower is constructed from sandstone blocks and stands at an elevation of 723 meters above sea level. It was originally built as a triangulation tower for geodetic surveying by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The structure provides 360-degree panoramic views of the Ore Mountains, Bohemian Switzerland, and the Lusatian Mountains. Visitors can observe the distinct horizontal rock layering characteristic of the surrounding mesa formation. The base of the tower includes a small historic refreshment area. The tower remains one of the oldest lookout structures of its kind in the region.

Photo spot

The upper observation gallery facing north provides the most expansive view over the German border.

Insider tips

Bring wind-resistant clothing, as the exposed mesa summit can be significantly windier than the surrounding valley.

Use binoculars to spot the distant rock formations of Saxon Switzerland across the border.

Combine the visit with a short walk along the perimeter of the mesa to see the dramatic sandstone cliffs.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the tower during thunderstorms, as the elevated stone structure is highly susceptible to lightning strikes.

Good to know

The tower is generally open daily, but may close during periods of severe high winds or heavy icing in winter.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near the observation deck, as the enclosed space can become noisy; carry out all trash to preserve the protected landscape area.
