Overview

The Orava Logging Railway is a preserved 760mm narrow-gauge forest railway located in the Orava Beskids of Northern Slovakia. It was originally constructed in the early 20th century to facilitate timber extraction from the Orava forest region. The line currently connects the Tanečník station to the Beskyd saddle, traversing a scenic mountainous route. The museum operates historical steam and diesel locomotives that once served the logging industry. The route reaches a maximum elevation of 935 meters above sea level at its highest point. The current operational section is part of a restored portion of the much larger historical Orava-Kysuce Forest Railway. Visitors can view an exhibition documenting the mechanical history of the logging operations at the Tanečník terminal.

Insider tips

Sit on the open-air carriages for the best views of the surrounding dense spruce forests.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as temperatures at the 935-meter summit station can be significantly lower than in the valley.

Check for pre-booking options during peak tourist months to ensure seat availability on steam-powered excursions.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike along the tracks outside of designated public pathways, as it is hazardous and restricted.

Good to know

Operations are generally restricted to weekends and holidays in the off-season, with daily operations typically available during the peak summer tourist season.

Etiquette

Stay behind designated safety barriers on the platforms and do not lean out of train carriages while in motion.
