Overview

Orava Castle is a massive medieval fortress perched on a 112-meter high limestone cliff overlooking the Orava River in Slovakia. Originally built in the 13th century, the structure serves as a vertical complex consisting of a lower, middle, and upper castle constructed at different historical elevations. The site functioned as a strategic administrative center and defensive stronghold for the Kingdom of Hungary. Today, it operates as the Orava Museum, preserving historical collections of weaponry, regional archaeology, and ethnographic artifacts. The castle's architecture reflects a transition from Romanesque and Gothic styles to Renaissance and Neo-Gothic modifications. It is widely recognized as a primary filming location for the 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with excellent grip, as the internal stone staircases are steep, uneven, and can be slippery.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the thick stone walls keep the interior corridors significantly cooler than the outside temperature.

Prepare for a high volume of stairs; the tour involves climbing several hundred steps to reach the highest point.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike the surrounding cliffs without proper gear, and avoid arriving without pre-booking if visiting during the peak July-August holiday period.

Good to know

Closed on Mondays during the off-season months; the castle remains open daily during the summer peak season.
