Overview

The Castello di Udine dominates the city skyline from the summit of a hill traditionally believed to have been raised by Attila the Hun to view the burning of Aquileia. The current Renaissance-style building was reconstructed following a 1511 earthquake. It serves as the seat of the Civic Museums of Udine, housing the Archaeological Museum, the Gallery of Ancient Art, the Museum of Photography, and the Friulian Museum of Photography. The interior features the Parliament Hall, which contains elaborate frescoes and served as the meeting place for the Parliament of the Patria del Friuli. Visitors access the museum level via a grand staircase designed by Giovanni da Udine. The site offers panoramic views of the city, the surrounding Friulian plain, and the distant Carnic Alps. The ground floor displays a significant collection of stone sculptures and architectural fragments found across the region.
