Overview

Castle Bañeres is an Almohad-period fortification situated at 830 meters above sea level on the peak of the Tossal del Águila. The structure features a distinctive 17-meter-tall square keep (Torre del Homenaje) constructed primarily with rammed earth. It served as a strategic defensive point for the Islamic population during the 12th and 13th centuries. The fortress was reclaimed for Christian forces by James I of Aragon in 1245. The site currently houses the Festival Museum, which documents the local Moros y Cristianos festivities. The castle complex retains segments of its original defensive walls and cisterns. Visitors can access the tower roof for panoramic views of the Mariola mountain range.

Visit the local tourist office in the town center before ascending to verify current internal access conditions for the tower.

Bring binoculars to identify the surrounding mountain peaks from the top of the keep.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the climb in flip-flops or open-toed sandals due to the loose gravel paths.

Etiquette
