The complex was declared a National Artistic Monument in 1931.

3

Despite the name 'Moros' (Moors), there is no archeological proof that these were living quarters, supporting the theory that they were fortified silos for grain or valuables.

5

Each chamber has a specific window opening, which provided ventilation crucial for grain storage.

Overview

Covetes dels Moros is a man-made complex of approximately 50 cave chambers carved into a vertical sandstone cliff face in Bocairent. The site consists of a series of windows providing access to internal rooms connected by shafts and tunnels. Archeological evidence suggests these chambers were used as granaries or storage spaces rather than residential dwellings. They date back to the Hispano-Muslim period, specifically between the 10th and 11th centuries. The total area of the interior space is approximately 280 square meters. Visitors navigate the interior by climbing through narrow openings and moving between levels using internal ladders. The cliff overlooks the Clariano River valley. It is located on the northern edge of the historic center of Bocairent.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as the internal passages and carved steps are uneven and steep.

People with claustrophobia or limited mobility should exercise caution, as the interior tunnels are narrow and require physical crawling.

Carry a small headlamp or flashlight to see better inside the unlit internal chambers.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting if you have significant mobility issues or a fear of confined spaces, as the climb is physically demanding.

Good to know

Closed on certain public holidays; may close during heavy rain due to safety concerns regarding slippery internal surfaces.

Etiquette

Strictly no climbing on the exterior rock face outside of the designated visitor path; avoid loud noises that echo in the small chambers.
