Overview

Gjipe Beach is a secluded coastal cove situated at the base of a deep limestone canyon on the Albanian Riviera. The beach is accessible primarily by a 30-minute hiking trail from the top of the canyon or by water taxi from the nearby village of Himarë. It features a mix of white pebbles and sand, bordered by high, rugged cliff walls. The water is clear, turquoise, and transitions rapidly to deep sea levels. There are no direct road access points for private vehicles, maintaining its relative isolation. Small basic campsites and seasonal mobile food kiosks operate on the beach during the peak summer months. The beach marks the mouth of the Gjipe Canyon, which is a protected natural monument. Natural shade is limited to the areas immediately adjacent to the canyon cliffs.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking shoes for the descent from the parking area, as the path is steep and rocky.

Bring your own shade equipment or umbrellas, as there is little natural cover on the pebble beach.

Carry sufficient drinking water, as options are limited to seasonal small-scale kiosks.

What to avoid

Attempting to drive a standard vehicle down the hiking path; parking at the top and walking is the only viable method.

Good to know

Access via the trail is possible year-round, but water taxis and beach facilities operate only during the summer season.

Etiquette

Respect the 'leave no trace' principle due to the lack of formal waste collection; carry all trash out.
