Overview

Batu Caves is a series of limestone caves housing a major Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Murugan. The site is anchored by a 42.7-meter-high statue of Murugan, which stands at the base of 272 brightly colored steps. The primary cavern, known as Cathedral Cave, features high vaulted ceilings and various Hindu shrines. The complex originated from the dissolution of limestone over 400 million years ago and was promoted as a place of worship in the late 19th century. Several smaller caves, including the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, contain intricate statues and paintings detailing Hindu mythology. The site is a focal point for the annual Thaipusam festival, drawing over a million devotees. The limestone formations host a diverse ecosystem, including rare trapdoor spiders and fruit bats.
