Interesting facts
1

The site represents the 'Itararé Group,' providing a rare visual record of glacial sedimentation in South America.

2

Varvites at this location allow scientists to count annual layers, similar to reading tree rings, to understand ancient climate patterns.

3

The quarry was formerly a source of stone for construction before its historical and scientific importance led to its preservation as a municipal park.

4

The distinct horizontal layering is a result of glacial meltwater lakes carrying sediments of varying particle sizes during different seasons.

5

Evidence of dropstones—rocks deposited by melting icebergs into fine mud—is visible within the sedimentary layers.

Overview

Parque Geológico do Varvito is an open-air geological park located in a former quarry, officially declared a national monument by the Brazilian government in 1995. The site features rare, rhythmic sedimentary rock layers known as varvites, which provide a geological record of the Carboniferous Period approximately 280 million years ago. These varvites were formed by the seasonal melting of glaciers, creating distinct light and dark strata that track annual deposition cycles. The park encompasses 44,000 square meters and includes exposed rock walls, a decorative lake, and walking trails. It serves as an educational site for geology and paleontology students due to its clear evidence of past glacial activity in the region. The park infrastructure includes observation decks, picnic areas, and interpretive signage explaining the history of the site. It is recognized as one of the most significant geological outcrops of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes as the terrain around the rock outcrops can be uneven.

Bring sun protection, as the primary rock-viewing areas have limited natural canopy cover.

Download or print the descriptive map from the official municipal website beforehand to better understand the geological formations.

What to avoid

Attempting to collect 'souvenir' rock samples is strictly prohibited and carries environmental penalties.

Good to know

Typically closed on Mondays for maintenance.

Etiquette

Do not climb on the rock walls or touch the exposed geological formations to prevent erosion and damage; remain on designated paths.
