Overview

The Kursaal is a cultural and conference center in San Sebastián defined by two massive, translucent glass cubes designed by architect Rafael Moneo. Completed in 1999, the structure is situated at the mouth of the Urumea River where it meets the Cantabrian Sea. The auditorium accommodates up to 1,800 people, while the chamber hall holds 600. Its exterior is composed of double-walled glass panels that are internally illuminated, creating a glowing effect at night. The center serves as the primary venue for the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Heineken Jazzaldia. The building was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture in 2001. Its design replaced the historic Gran Casino that previously occupied the site. The venue connects the Gros district to the city's coastal promenade.
