Overview

Fláje Dam is a unique buttress dam located in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) of the Czech Republic. It is the only dam of its kind in the country, featuring a hollow buttress construction built between 1954 and 1963. The structure is 54 meters high and 445 meters long at its crest. It serves as a primary reservoir for drinking water for the Most and Teplice regions. The dam submerged the former village of Fláje, which was demolished during its construction. A reinforced concrete bridge connects the two sides of the valley above the dam wall. The area is surrounded by dense spruce forests and sits at an elevation of approximately 750 meters above sea level.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars for birdwatching and spotting local wildlife in the surrounding Krušné hory forests.

Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as the terrain around the reservoir is uneven and often damp.

Check weather conditions before departing, as mountain elevation causes rapid temperature drops.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk on the dam crest if barriers are closed for maintenance, and avoid leaving trash in the protected drinking water watershed.

Good to know

The internal gallery is occasionally opened for guided technical tours; check local water authority updates for specific seasonal access.

Etiquette

Strictly follow signage regarding the water protection zone; swimming and unauthorized water craft are prohibited.
