Overview

Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park encompasses the largest artificial water body in Lithuania, created by damming the Nemunas River in 1959. The park covers approximately 11,000 hectares, featuring diverse ecosystems including pine forests and complex shoreline relief. It serves as a critical nesting and migration site for rare bird species, particularly near the shallow bays and lagoons. The territory includes the 17th-century Pažaislis Monastery, a significant example of Baroque architecture located on a peninsula. Extensive hiking trails wind through the Girionys and Dubrava forests. Visitors can explore the landscape of the Karčiupis botanical-zoological reserve located within the park boundaries. The park's terrain includes steep erosion-formed cliffs along the lagoon's edge.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars to observe bird populations from the designated lookout towers.

Choose marked trails in the Dubrava forest area to avoid getting lost in the dense, protected woodland.

Pack insect repellent during the summer months as the lagoon's proximity leads to high mosquito activity.

What to avoid

Attempting to swim in areas not designated as public beaches, as the lagoon floor can be uneven and hazardous due to submerged former structures.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect sensitive bog and forest habitats; keep dogs on a leash.
