Overview

Kadagių slėnis (Juniper Valley) is a botanical preserve located on the steep slopes of the Nemunas River valley near the Kaunas Reservoir. The site features a 1.3-kilometer wooden boardwalk that winds through one of the largest naturally occurring common juniper colonies in Lithuania. The elevation of the slopes provides panoramic views of the Kaunas Reservoir, the largest artificial body of water in the country. The area is protected as a botanical reserve to conserve the fragile ecosystem of the juniper trees, some of which are centuries old. The boardwalk was constructed to minimize soil erosion and prevent damage to the sensitive root systems of the plants. The surrounding landscape is characterized by high, sandy bluffs that drop sharply toward the water. It is a designated site for viewing the geological formations of the Nemunas riverbanks.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars for better birdwatching and viewing the distant shores of the reservoir.

Carry out all trash, as there are no bins along the trail to discourage wildlife interference.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb down the steep, unstable clay slopes to reach the water level, which causes severe erosion.

Etiquette
