The park was established on the site of the Chartreuse des Saints-Esprit monastery, founded in 1618.
During the 19th century, the site was repurposed into a military fort known as the Fort de la Chartreuse.
Much of the site's current topography is defined by the remnants of the military fortification walls and moat systems.
