Overview

The Ponte Pênsil de São Vicente is a historic suspension bridge completed in 1914, connecting the island of São Vicente to the mainland of Praia Grande. It was the first bridge of its kind built in Brazil, designed by the engineer Saturnino de Brito. The structure was commissioned to support a water pipeline carrying supply from the mainland to the coastal city. It underwent a major restoration between 2013 and 2015 to preserve its original metallic frame and stone support towers. The bridge remains a functional crossing point for light vehicles and pedestrians. It spans the Japuí Channel, which separates the Atlantic side from the estuarine area.
