Interesting facts
1

The beach is located at the terminal point of the Kaputaş Canyon, a narrow gorge that serves as a conduit for groundwater to reach the sea.

2

The water temperature at the shoreline is significantly lower than the surrounding Mediterranean due to the mixing of cold canyon spring water.

3

The beach was formed by alluvial deposits carried through the canyon during seasonal rainfall.

4

The 187-step staircase was constructed to provide public access to what was previously a secluded, difficult-to-reach cove.

5

The distinctive turquoise color of the water is caused by the mineral-rich cold spring water meeting the saline sea water.

Overview

Kaputaş Beach is a natural cove located at the mouth of a canyon on the D400 coastal highway between Kaş and Kalkan. The beach is formed by a gorge where a subterranean spring flows into the Mediterranean, resulting in distinctly cool, turquoise-colored water. Access to the beach requires descending approximately 187 concrete steps from the cliff-side road. The shoreline consists primarily of coarse sand and smooth pebbles rather than fine soft sand. Due to its position at the base of steep canyon walls, the beach occupies a very narrow space that can become completely submerged during high tide or heavy sea conditions. There are no hotels or buildings directly on the beach, preserving its natural aesthetic. The site is a popular stop for road-trippers traveling the Lycian Coast.

Insider tips

Bring water shoes to navigate the coarse pebbles and stones comfortably.

Visit on a weekday morning to secure a spot before the beach reaches its limited physical capacity.

Limit your gear to essentials, as the long, steep staircase is difficult to climb with heavy bags.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting during windy days, as the beach lacks shelter and large waves can make swimming dangerous.

Etiquette

Swimwear is expected on the beach; however, cover up when ascending the stairs back to the highway level.
