The city contains a well-preserved Roman-era theater built into the hillside. Extensive archaeological excavations are ongoing throughout the site, which remains partially covered by sand dunes. The adjacent Patara Beach is a protected nesting ground for Caretta caretta sea turtles. Ancient structural remains include a triple-arched Roman triumphal gate and a necropolis with Lycian-style sarcophagi. The city maintained its strategic importance through the Byzantine period until its eventual abandonment due to the silting of the harbor.
