The terrain features granite peaks, glacier-carved valleys, and a rugged Atlantic coastline. Cadillac Mountain serves as the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard at 1,530 feet. The park includes 45 miles of historic carriage roads constructed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. between 1913 and 1940. Visitors have access to 158 miles of hiking trails ranging from coastal paths to steep mountain climbs. The park is home to diverse ecosystems including spruce-fir forests, wetlands, and intertidal zones. Ocean Drive is a prominent 7-mile section of the Park Loop Road that passes key coastal landmarks. Much of the park's land was donated by private citizens throughout the early 20th century.
