Overview

Ahsan Manzil, known as the Pink Palace, served as the official residential palace and seat of the Dhaka Nawabs. Located on the banks of the Buriganga River, the Indo-Saracenic Revival structure was built in 1872 on the site of an old French factory. The building was heavily damaged by a tornado in 1888 and subsequently reconstructed with its signature central dome. It was acquired by the Bangladesh government in 1985 and underwent extensive restoration before opening as a national museum in 1992. The museum complex consists of two main sections: the Rangmahal on the east and the Andarmahal on the west. Visitors explore rooms displaying portraits of the Nawabs, period furniture, and Victorian-era artifacts. The exterior is characterized by its prominent semi-circular dome and sweeping grand staircase leading to a veranda overlooking the river. It stands as a prime example of 19th-century colonial architectural heritage in Old Dhaka.
