Overview

The bronze Statue of Saint Wenceslas, created by sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek, serves as a centerpiece at the upper end of Wenceslas Square in Prague. Erected between 1912 and 1913, it depicts the patron saint of Bohemia in full armor, holding a lance and banner, surrounded by four other Bohemian patron saints: Saint Ludmila, Saint Agnes of Bohemia, Saint Procopius, and Saint Adalbert. The monument symbolizes national identity and has been a focal point for major historical protests, including the 1989 Velvet Revolution. It is situated directly in front of the neo-Renaissance National Museum building. The main statue is made of bronze, while the pedestal is constructed from granite.

Insider tips

Visit during the evening to see the statue illuminated against the backdrop of the National Museum.

Look for the smaller, inverted sculpture of Saint Wenceslas by David Černý in the nearby Lucerna Palace for a contrasting modern interpretation.

Use the surrounding square as a meeting point, but be wary of pickpockets in this high-traffic area.

What to avoid

Do not mistake this statue for the satirical, inverted version by David Černý located inside the nearby Lucerna Palace passage.
