Overview

Notre-Dame de la Garde is a 19th-century Neo-Byzantine basilica situated on the highest natural point in Marseille at 149 meters above sea level. Locally known as La Bonne Mère, it replaced an earlier 13th-century chapel dedicated to the protector of sailors. The structure features a campanile topped with a 11-meter-high gilded copper statue of the Virgin and Child, which is visible from much of the city. Its interior is characterized by extensive polychrome marble, mosaic work, and numerous ex-voto offerings suspended from the vaulted ceilings. The site provides a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Vieux-Port, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding limestone hills. The basilica consists of two levels: a lower vaulted crypt carved into the rock and an upper sanctuary decorated with gold mosaics. The current structure was completed in 1864 under the direction of architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu.
