Overview

Rigi Kulm is the highest peak of the Rigi massif in the Swiss Alps, reaching an elevation of 1,797 meters. It serves as the historic terminus for the Rigi Railway, which was the first mountain rack railway in Europe, opening in 1871. The summit offers a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Swiss Plateau, the Black Forest, and the peaks of the Bernese Alps. A dedicated viewing platform provides unobstructed views of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug. The summit area features a hotel and restaurant, operating as a destination for hikers, skiers, and excursionists year-round. It is accessible via two rack railways originating from Vitznau and Goldau, as well as a cable car from Weggis. The mountain is technically an independent massif surrounded by water on three sides.

Insider tips

Check the live webcams on the Rigi website before departing, as cloud cover can obscure the summit view.

Bring layers regardless of the season; the summit is significantly colder and windier than the lakeside towns below.

If arriving by train, sit on the right side when ascending from Vitznau for the best views of the lake.

What to avoid

Attempting to hike up during heavy fog or low visibility conditions, as trails are less marked at the peak.

Good to know

The summit is accessible year-round, though specific railway maintenance may cause temporary service interruptions in late autumn or spring.

Etiquette

Sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear is recommended; mountain trails can be uneven and rocky.
