Overview

Okochi Sanso Garden was the former mountain villa of the silent film star Denjiro Okochi. The property spans 20,000 square meters on the slopes of Mt. Ogura, offering panoramic views of the Hozugawa River and the Kyoto cityscape. It features a sprawling stroll garden designed with distinct seasonal foliage, including cherry blossoms in spring and fiery maples in autumn. The grounds contain several traditional structures, including the Daijo-kaku, the Teahouse, and the Shaka-do hall. Visitors receive a complimentary cup of matcha and a traditional Japanese sweet included with their entry. Unlike many public parks, this garden utilizes winding paths that connect hilltop lookouts to lower, sheltered mossy groves. The estate was built over a 30-year period to showcase various Japanese landscaping techniques. It remains one of the best-preserved private residences of the Showa period.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes as the garden is built on a hillside with many stone stairs and inclined paths.

Take your time at the summit viewpoint; it is one of the highest accessible vantage points in the Arashiyama area.

Do not rush through the tea ceremony; the seating area is designed for slow viewing of the garden landscape.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting mid-day on weekends, when the proximity to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove causes significant congestion.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet volume, as the garden is intended for contemplation; do not step off designated paths into moss or planted areas.
