Overview

Sogenchi Teien is the historic 14th-century garden of Tenryu-ji temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyoto. Designed by the Zen master Muso Soseki, it is one of the oldest landscape gardens in Japan that retains its original form. The garden features a central pond, Sogen-chi, designed to mirror the surrounding mountains of Arashiyama and Kameyama. Its design utilizes the borrowed scenery technique, known as shakkei, integrating distant landscape features into the immediate garden view. Large stones are arranged along the pond edge, representing a traditional Chinese legend of a carp climbing a waterfall. The garden transitioned from early Buddhist styles to reflect Muromachi-period aesthetics. Despite fire damage to the temple buildings, the garden has survived largely intact through the centuries.
