Interesting facts
1

The rock formation known as 'The Polar Bear' is one of the most identifiable shapes in the park.

2

Due to the temperature inversion effect, sub-alpine plants often grow at significantly lower altitudes here than in surrounding mountain ranges.

3

Střmen Castle, located on the premises, was a 14th-century fortification later abandoned in the 15th century.

4

The narrowest passages in the site are colloquially known as the 'Siberia' section due to the persistent cold and lack of sunlight.

Teplické skály features higher vertical cliffs than the adjacent Adršpach circuit, reaching up to 70 meters in some areas.

Overview

Teplické skály is a prominent sandstone rock city located within the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area in the Czech Republic. It is characterized by deep ravines, narrow canyons, and towering stone formations created by the erosion of Cretaceous sandstones. The site is part of the larger Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, but features more vertical walls and narrower passages than its neighbor. Visitors navigate a marked circuit that includes metal staircases and elevated paths through the rock labyrinth. The area acts as a natural cold trap, resulting in unique temperature inversions where snow can persist in deep gorges well into the spring. Extensive trail systems connect the main rock circuits with the surrounding forest and the ruins of Střmen Castle.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the rock paths can be slippery, even when dry.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as the deep, shaded gorges remain significantly colder than the forest above.

Complete the full 6-kilometer circuit to reach the scenic overlooks that provide panoramic views of the entire rock city.

What to avoid

Attempting the circuit in standard sneakers or sandals; the terrain requires sturdy, closed-toe hiking footwear.

Good to know

The site remains accessible year-round, though some pathways may be restricted during winter months due to ice accumulation.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile sandstone environment; climbing is restricted to specific, permitted areas for registered members.
