Overview

Kaçkar Mountains National Park covers 52,970 hectares in the Rize and Artvin provinces of Northeastern Turkey. The park features the 3,937-meter Kaçkar peak, the highest point in the Kaçkar range. The landscape is characterized by glacially carved valleys, high-altitude alpine meadows (yayla), and dense coniferous forests. It serves as a biodiversity hotspot for the Caucasus Ecoregion, supporting species like the brown bear, chamois, and bearded vulture. The park contains numerous glacial lakes, including the notable Deniz Gölü at an altitude of approximately 3,300 meters. Established in 1994, it provides protected habitat for both flora and endemic fauna. The terrain is rugged, with vertical drops and narrow ridges frequently covered by snow until mid-summer. Water sources include mountain streams fed by glaciers and snowmelt.

Insider tips

Carry professional-grade navigation tools as weather patterns shift rapidly and heavy fog is common.

Ensure all footwear is waterproof and provides ankle support for steep, rocky scree slopes.

Register your trekking route with local mountain rescue units if attempting multi-day high-altitude traverses.

What to avoid

Do not attempt high-altitude summits without proper acclimatization or experience with technical scrambling.

Good to know

High-altitude trails and mountain passes are strictly restricted to the summer season; winter access is prohibited due to extreme avalanche risk.

Etiquette

Respect local yayla customs and private pasture boundaries; always seek permission before photographing private dwellings or inhabitants.
