Overview

Tokon-do, or the Eastern Golden Hall, is a principal structure within the Kofuku-ji temple complex in Nara. Originally commissioned by Empress Gensho in 710, the current building is a 1415 reconstruction that stands as a designated National Treasure of Japan. The hall enshrines the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) as its principal image. It is flanked by statues of Nikko Bosatsu and Gakko Bosatsu, along with guardian figures such as the Twelve Heavenly Generals. The architecture reflects the traditional style of the Muromachi period. The structure was rebuilt multiple times throughout history following damage from fires and conflicts. It remains an active site for Buddhist ritual and preservation of Nara-period sculptural art.

Insider tips

Combine your visit with the nearby Kofuku-ji National Treasure Museum to see the statues removed from the hall for protection.

Walk around the exterior perimeter to view the distinct roof tiling and wood joinery that define Muromachi-era construction.

Respect the prayer areas as this is an active religious site rather than a pure museum.

What to avoid

Do not feed the deer near the temple entrance, as they are aggressive and often congregate in the temple's main access paths.

Etiquette

Remove hats and remain quiet. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the hall. Do not touch the statues or artifacts.
